Chapter 1: The Miracle I Was Never Meant to Keep
I carried a baby for my sister and her husband — the moment they saw her, they cried, "This is not the child we wanted," so I prepared an unforgettable lesson.
My sister Claire and I had always been incredibly close.
So when doctors told her she could never carry a child, I watched something inside her break.
For two years, she begged me.
"Please, Marianne," she whispered.
"You're the only person I trust with my whole heart."
Her husband, Evan, sat beside her with wet eyes.
"We'll love this baby more than anything," he said.
I was 38.
My own children were grown.
My body was tired, but my heart remembered every thunderstorm Claire and I had survived together.
So I said yes.
The pregnancy was smoother than anyone expected.
Claire came to every appointment.
She pressed both hands to my belly when the baby kicked and wept against my hospital gown.
"That's my miracle," she said.
I believed her.
Then the baby was born.
A tiny, warm, perfect little girl.
When Claire and Evan stepped into the hospital room, I expected them to reach for her.
They didn't.
Evan moved closer, looked into the blanket, and his face went white.
Claire's smile vanished so fast it scared me.
The room went strangely quiet except for the baby's soft little sounds.
"Claire?" I whispered.
She backed away like the child had burned her.
Evan shook his head.
"No.
No, this is wrong."
My arms tightened around the baby.
"What's wrong?"
Claire's voice cracked.
"This is not the baby we wanted."
I stared at my sister.
"We were promised something else.
We don't want this child."
My heart hammered until my own breathing sounded far away.
"Explain that to me," I said.
Claire and Evan started whispering to each other, completely ignoring me and the baby girl.
Their words cut deep.
I held the baby closer to calm her, and right there, one thought settled in my chest.
I would do something they would never expect.
I made my decision right there in that hospital room.
