Chapter 1: The Bench by The Lake

I built a billion-dollar empire, but a walk in Central Park shattered my reality.
I found the woman I abandoned 5 years ago sleeping on a freezing bench — clutching three babies.
They had knuckle dimples exactly like mine.
My wealthy mother stood beside me, pale with terror.
But when my ex woke up, trembling, and handed me a worn envelope, I realized this isn't the worst part...
"Arthur…
those children are yours."
I froze in the middle of Central Park.
Only minutes earlier, I had been walking beside The Lake with my mother, listening as she reminded me that at thirty-eight, my life had become nothing but business calls, high-rise meetings, and real estate deals.
Then I saw Madeline.
The woman I had loved five years earlier.
She was asleep on a park bench beneath a worn coat, with three babies wrapped in painfully thin blankets beside her.
Three babies.
One of them stirred and pushed a tiny hand out from beneath the blanket.
On the knuckle was the exact same small dimple I had carried since childhood.
I turned toward my mother.
Eleanor did not look surprised.
She looked terrified.
"Did you know about this?"
"Arthur…
let's go."
"No."
At that moment, Madeline woke.
The second she saw me, she pulled all three babies tightly against her.
"Don't come near us."
My chest tightened.
"Madeline…
what happened?"
She gave a bitter laugh.
"You really don't know?"
I turned back to Eleanor.
"Mom.
Are those children mine?"
She closed her eyes.
Then whispered:
"Yes."
My knees met the damp ground.
"Madeline, I never knew.
I never received anything."
Her eyes shifted toward my mother.
"That's because someone made sure you didn't."
Madeline reached into an old diaper bag and pulled out a folded envelope, worn at the edges from being carried for years.
She handed it to me.
Inside was a document.
I unfolded it slowly.
Read every line.
Then my eyes reached the name printed at the bottom.
My bl00d went cold.
Because that name explained why Madeline had disappeared from my life…
And why my mother had just warned me that the three children were not even the worst part of the truth.

What is written on that document — and whose name did Arthur see?
