Chapter 2: The Night I Walked Out the Door

Part 2 ⬇️
When Derek opened the front door that evening, he stopped dead in the doorway.
Both boys were in their bouncer seats in the hallway.
Bags were packed beside them.
And my mom was standing in the living room with her coat on.
"What is this?" Derek said.
"I'm leaving for three days," I told him.
"You said moms don't get sick days.
So I'm taking one.
Actually, I'm taking three."
His face went white.
"You can't just LEAVE."
"You have a job," I said.
"I know.
But tonight, you also have two sons.
Their bottles are in the fridge.
Diapers are under the changing table.
I wrote everything down."
I picked up my overnight bag with my good arm and walked toward the door.
"This is insane," he snapped.
"You're their MOTHER."
"And you're their father."
My mom followed me out without a word.
We were halfway down the driveway when Derek appeared in the doorway, one baby already crying behind him.
"You can't do this!" he shouted.
"GET BACK HERE."
I didn't turn around.
But then my phone buzzed.
It wasn't Derek calling.
It was a number I didn't recognize — and the name that appeared in the message made my stomach drop.
