Chapter 2: She Can't Find Out

It was a phone.
Not his regular phone — that was sitting in the cupholder where it always was.
This one was older, smaller, and had no case.
A burner.
My hands were shaking as I turned it over.
The screen was cracked along one corner.
There was no lock on it.
I almost put it back.
I almost told myself there was a perfectly good explanation.
But I didn't put it back.
The last message in the inbox was from a contact saved only as "K."
It said: *"She can't find out.
You promised."*
The timestamp was yesterday.
Saturday.
The day Liam told me he was helping his brother move furniture across town.
I sat in that parking lot for a long time.
Cars pulled in and out around me.
Someone honked.
I didn't move.
When I got home, Liam was in the kitchen making lunch, completely relaxed, humming to himself.
He smiled when he saw me.
"How were the errands?"
I set his keys on the counter.
I didn't say anything about the phone.
I just watched his face.
And then his eyes dropped — just for a second — to my jacket pocket.
He knew.
