Chapter 1: The Thing Under the Seat

I borrowed my husband's car to run errands and accidentally dropped my lip balm between the front seats — I reached my hand deep under the driver's seat to grab it, but the specific object my fingers closed around made my heart start pounding.
My husband, Liam, and I have been married for five years.
We have a very comfortable, trusting relationship.
We share a mortgage, a dog, and a completely normal life.
We've never been the type of couple to snoop through each other's phones or demand constant updates.
Trust has just never been an issue.
Liam takes great pride in his SUV.
He keeps it meticulously clean, washing it every weekend and maintaining a strict "no eating inside" rule.
But he's not weirdly protective of who drives it.
If my car is low on gas or blocked in the driveway, he'll toss me his keys without a second thought.
This morning, my sedan was at the mechanic getting new brakes, so I took his car to run a few weekend errands.
I dropped off some dry cleaning, grabbed a coffee, and finally pulled into the grocery store parking lot.
Before getting out of the car, I went to apply some lip balm.
It slipped out of my hand, bounced off the center console, and fell right into that annoying gap between the driver's seat and the middle console.
I sighed, unbuckled my seatbelt, and leaned over.
I reached deeper into the gap, feeling around blindly for the lip balm.
Instead, my fingers brushed against something solid wedged underneath the driver's seat.
I pulled it loose.
The moment I realized what I was holding, my heart started racing.
