Chapter 2: She Already Knew

The nurse rushed in.
Melissa was still screaming, her hands pressed to her mouth.
I pulled the baby close to my chest and looked at her back again.
There was a birthmark — large, dark, shaped in a way I had never seen before.
But that wasn't what stopped my breath.
Ryan had gone completely still.
"Ryan," I said.
"Talk to me.
Right now."
He wouldn't look at me.
He walked to the window and stood there with his back turned.
Melissa grabbed his arm.
"Tell me what you know.
Tell me RIGHT NOW."
He finally turned around.
His eyes were red.
"That mark," he said quietly.
"I've seen it before.
On someone else.
Someone who should have nothing to do with this baby."
The room went cold.
"What are you saying?" Melissa whispered.
Ryan looked at me — really looked at me — and I felt something shift in my chest.
"I need to make a phone call," he said.
"Before I say another word."
He stepped into the hallway.
Through the glass, I watched him dial.
Watched whoever answered pick up immediately.
Then I saw his face collapse.
He came back in, sat down slowly, and said three words I will never forget.
"She already knew."
