Chapter 1: The Baby She Placed Back in My Arms

I became a surrogate for my brother — but when he saw his newborn daughter, he said, "I can't take this baby," and the reason made my knees buckle.
My twin brother, Ryan, and his wife, Melissa, had been trying to have a child for years.
When they finally asked if I'd consider becoming their surrogate, I agreed.
Ryan wasn't just my brother — he was my best friend.
He'd always supported me, always been there for me, especially after our parents passed away.
I already had a son of my own, and I understood the kind of love they were longing for.
I wanted to help them.
Melissa and Ryan came to every doctor's appointment and watched every ultrasound as their little baby grew.
When they found out it was a girl, they started buying tiny dresses and toys.
And they made a beautiful nursery for the baby.
When I finally gave birth, Melissa started crying the moment she laid eyes on her.
Then Ryan took the baby in his arms.
He stared at her for a few seconds.
Then his face went pale.
When I asked if something was wrong, he cleared his throat and said:
"I'm sorry, but...
I CAN'T TAKE HER HOME."
My voice trembled as I asked:
"Ryan, she's your daughter.
What's going on?"
He glanced directly at Melissa.
Then he looked straight at me and said:
"I'm sorry, but I have to give up the baby.
I'm not taking her with me!"
And he placed the baby back in my arms.
With tears in her eyes, Melissa demanded to know WHY they couldn't take their daughter home.
Ryan exhaled, his face turning red, and said:
"Look at HER BACK.
We can't DO THIS."
I looked at the baby's back and nearly fainted.
Melissa screamed so loudly that the entire hospital could hear her.

What did Ryan see on that baby's back — and what secret has been hiding this whole time?
