Chapter 8: What He Thought He Knew

I forwarded the message to Ryan's solicitor within the hour.

Her name was Grace Ellerton.

She had been calm and precise through everything, and when I sent her the screenshot she replied in under four minutes: *Noted.

This strengthens the harassment application considerably.

Do not respond.

Do not acknowledge.

Save everything.*

I saved everything.

Ryan and Melissa didn't know about the message yet.

I made a decision to tell Ryan in person rather than over the phone.

I drove to their house that evening, and when Ryan opened the door he looked lighter than I had seen him in weeks — tired, but lighter.

Clara was asleep on Melissa's chest in the living room.

Melissa looked up when I came in and something passed between us — not quite a smile, but close.

"She's been like this for an hour," Melissa said softly.

"I'm not moving until she decides to."

I sat down across from them and looked at my niece's face, slack and peaceful against her mother's shoulder.

Then I told Ryan about the message.

The lightness left his face.

He read the screenshot twice.

"He's not going to stop," Ryan said.

"Grace thinks this message actually helps us.

It establishes a pattern."

"I don't care about patterns.

I care that this man is inserting himself into my family."

"Ryan—"

"He sat outside my house, Sara." His voice was low, careful.

Melissa was still holding Clara, watching him.

"He sat outside my house and watched the windows.

And now he's sending messages saying *this isn't over.* What does that mean?

What is he planning?"

"We don't know that he's planning anything.

He may just be—"

"What?

Grieving?

He has nothing to grieve.

The test confirmed it."

"He may not accept the test."

Ryan set the phone down on the coffee table.

He looked at it for a moment.

"Then what do we do?"

"We let Grace handle it.

We document everything.

We don't engage."

"And if he shows up here again?"

"You call the police.

Immediately.

Not after.

Not once you've gone outside to talk to him.

You call from inside the house."

Melissa shifted Clara gently.

"He won't get what he wants," she said quietly.

"There's nothing here for him.

The test is clear.

The records are clear." She looked at Ryan.

"He's a man who made a mistake and can't accept that it didn't mean what he wanted it to mean."

Ryan looked at her.

Something passed between them — something I wasn't entirely part of, and wasn't supposed to be.

"Okay," he said.

Grace filed the formal harassment application the next morning.

Daniel was served notice three days later.

His solicitor responded with a letter that questioned the validity of the paternity test and requested access to the clinic's original IVF records.

Grace called me when the letter arrived.

"He's not going to get the records," she said.

"Clinic records are protected.

His solicitor knows this.

This is a pressure tactic."

"Will it work?"

"It will create noise.

It won't create access." A pause.

"But Sara, I want you to be prepared.

He may escalate before he backs down.

People in his position often do.

They push harder right before they stop."

"What does escalation look like?"

"Showing up somewhere public.

Contacting family members.

Going to the press with a story, even a false one." She paused again.

"Does he know about your role in the surrogacy?"

I hadn't considered that.

"He might," I said slowly.

"If he knows Melissa's sister.

If he's been asking questions."

"Then he may try to use you.

To create doubt.

To suggest the birthmark means something it doesn't."

I looked at the wall of my kitchen.

Owen's school timetable was pinned there, slightly crooked.

I had been meaning to straighten it for weeks.

"Let him try," I said.

"That's the right answer," Grace said.

"Just make sure you mean it when it gets harder to say."

May you like

Two days later, Daniel Marsh walked into the café where Melissa and I had met, sat down across from me without being invited, and said:

"I think you deserve to know the truth about what really happened between Melissa and me."
