Chapter 1: The Mark That Changed Everything
I became a surrogate for my brother — but when he saw his newborn baby, he rejected her, and the reason made me go pale.
My twin brother, Ryan, and his wife, Melissa, had been trying to have a baby for years.
When they finally asked if I'd consider becoming their surrogate, I agreed.
Ryan had been the best brother and my best friend my entire life.
He'd always supported me and always been there for me.
I already had a son of my own, and I understood the kind of love they were longing for.
I wanted to help them.
Especially because whenever I saw Ryan spending time with my son, he seemed happiest in those moments.
When they found out it was a girl, they started buying tiny dresses and toys.
They even painted the nursery pink.
When I finally gave birth, Melissa and Ryan came to my hospital room right away.
Melissa cried with joy when she saw her daughter.
Then Ryan picked up the baby.
He stared at her for a few seconds.
Then his face went pale.
When I asked if he was okay, he said in a trembling voice:
"I'm sorry, but...
I can't take her."
I thought I'd misheard him.
"Ryan, she's your daughter.
What are you talking about?"
He looked directly at Melissa.
Then he looked straight at me and said:
"I'm sorry, but I'm not taking her home with me!"
And he placed the baby back into my arms.
With tears in her eyes, Melissa demanded to know why they couldn't take their daughter home.
Ryan exhaled, his face turning red, and said:
"Look at her back.
We can't do this.
She can't be our daughter."
I looked at the baby's back and nearly fainted.
Melissa screamed so loudly that people all over the floor could hear her, and hospital staff came rushing in to see what had happened.
