Chapter 2: The Key She Was Never Supposed to Keep

"What's gone?" I grabbed his arm.
"Ethan.
What was back there?"
He sat down on the edge of the bed.
He wouldn't look at me.
"There was an envelope.
It had some documents in it."
"What kind of documents?"
He was quiet for too long.
"Ethan."
"My grandfather's will.
The original copy."
I stared at him.
"Why was it hidden in our closet?"
"Because my mother doesn't know I have it."
The room went cold.
"What does the will say?"
He finally looked up at me.
"It says something different from the version she showed the family."
I couldn't breathe.
"Are you telling me your mother has been in our house — with a key she was never supposed to have — and now the one document that contradicts her version of your grandfather's estate is gone?"
He didn't answer.
I picked up my phone and pulled up the front door camera app.
We'd installed it months ago and I had almost forgotten about it.
I scrolled back three days.
There she was.
Diane.
Walking through our front door in the middle of the afternoon.
Alone.
Carrying nothing when she went in.
Carrying a bag when she came out.
I turned the screen toward Ethan.
His face went white.
Then my phone rang.
It was Diane.
