Chapter 1: The Gift She Was Never Supposed to Give

I asked my husband not to tell his mother we were trying for a baby — then she handed me a bag and said, "You'll need these soon."
When my husband, Ethan, and I decided to start trying for a baby, I had one request.
"Please don't tell your mother."
He laughed.
"I wasn't planning to."
His mom, Diane, wasn't a bad person.
But she had a habit of turning every private detail of our lives into family news.
So for once, I wanted this to belong only to us.
Three weeks later, Diane stopped by for dinner.
As she was leaving, she handed me a small shopping bag.
"What's this?"
She smiled.
"You'll need these soon."
Inside were tiny white baby socks.
For a moment, I couldn't speak.
Then I looked at Ethan.
He looked just as confused as I felt.
"Mom, what is this?"
"Oh, relax.
It's just a little gift."
I waited until the door closed behind her.
"You told her."
"What?
No."
"Then why is your mother giving me baby clothes?!"
"I have no idea."
He sounded genuinely confused, but I was furious.
Then I picked up the socks again.
One of them had a tiny blue thread hanging from the heel.
My heart started pounding.
"No."
"What?"
"These are mine."
Ethan frowned.
"What?"
"These aren't like the ones I bought.
These are the ones I bought."
"How do you know?"
I pointed to the heel.
"That blue thread.
I almost cut it off."
He stared at the sock.
"Where were they?"
I swallowed.
"In the back of our bedroom closet."
Neither of us spoke for a moment.
Then Ethan grabbed his phone.
"Mom, where did you get those socks?"
I could hear Diane laughing through the speaker.
"I told you.
I bought them."
"No, you didn't."
Silence.
"They came from our bedroom."
Another pause.
Then Diane said:
"Maybe you should ask your wife why she was hiding them."
And hung up.
I stared at Ethan.
"How on earth did she get into our house?"
He didn't have an answer.
The next morning, I picked up the bag Diane had left behind to throw it away.
Something inside the lining shifted.
I reached into the small side pocket.
My fingers closed around something metal.
A key.
Ethan picked it up.
The second he saw it, his face changed.
"Is that…"
He walked to the front door.
"What are you doing?"
He slid the key into the lock.
It turned.
I stared at him.
"Your mother has a key to our house?"
"She's not supposed to."
"What does that mean?"
Ethan slowly pulled the key from the lock.
"She gave hers back to me two years ago."
"Then she made a copy."
Ethan didn't answer.
Suddenly, the baby socks weren't what bothered me most.
"Ethan…"
"What?"
"If she came into our house because she already knew we were trying for a baby…
why was she searching our bedroom?"
His expression changed.
"Wait."
"What?"
He was already heading toward the bedroom.
I followed him.
He opened the closet and reached behind a stack of boxes.
Then he froze.
"It's gone."
---
What did Diane take from that closet — and how long has she had a key to their home?
