Marcus didn't look at Danny when he spoke.
He looked straight at me.
"This man worked double shifts so I could have basketball shoes.
He drove me to practice at 5 a.m.
every Saturday for six years.
He sat in the back of every parent meeting and never once told me he was tired."
A few people in the crowd started clapping.
Danny's smile began to fade.
"He never missed a game.
Not one.
Not even when he broke two fingers at the shop and drove himself straight from the ER."
I didn't remember telling Marcus about that.
But he knew.
"So when I say my real father is in this gym tonight — I mean the man standing by that bench in the worn jacket.
The one who chose me when he didn't have to."
The gym erupted.
I couldn't move.
My throat was closed.
Marcus stepped down from the podium and walked straight past Danny without a word.
Danny grabbed his arm.
"I'm your blood," he said.
"You don't throw that away."
Marcus stopped.
He turned slowly.
"You left a note," he said quietly.
"He left a life."
Then Marcus let go of Danny's hand — and that's when I saw it.
Danny reached into his jacket pocket.
He pulled out an envelope and held it toward Marcus.
"You need to read this before you make any more decisions," he said.
"It changes everything."
