Chapter 1: The Man Who Chose Me

I adopted my best friend's son after he abandoned him — years later, the boy invited him to a championship game and gave a speech that left me in tears.
My best friend, Danny, called me at 2 a.m., 14 years ago.
His wife had just passed.
Aneurysm.
No warning.
He had a 4-year-old son named Marcus asleep in the next room, and he kept saying, "I can't do this, Tom.
I can't."
I told him I'd be there in the morning.
When I arrived at his house at 7 a.m., Danny was gone.
There was a note on the counter.
"I'm not built for this."
I was 28.
Single.
A mechanic making $19 an hour.
I adopted Marcus because I couldn't imagine leaving him in foster care.
I decided I would be the best father I could be.
Marcus became my one and only child.
Danny never called.
Not on birthdays.
Not on Christmas.
Until three months ago.
Turns out, he had remarried, gotten rich in commercial real estate, and somehow found Marcus on Instagram.
He started messaging him: "That pathetic man isn't your father," "Forget him," "I'm your blood."
Marcus never told me.
Not until the night before the state championship, when he sat at the foot of my bed and said, "Dad, I invited him tomorrow.
Please try to understand."
I didn't sleep.
The next day, Danny stepped into that gym in a navy suit that cost more than my truck.
He sat in the front row.
My row.
"It's time for him to remember who his real father is," he said to me with a smile.
Marcus scored 10 points.
They won by six.
They handed him the MVP trophy and a microphone.
"Tonight, sitting in this gym, is my real father," Marcus said.
The whole gym went quiet.
Danny's smile went wider.
"We haven't spoken in 14 years.
He says he wants to rebuild our relationship.
That's why I invited him here tonight.
So listen carefully..."
It felt like someone had knocked the air straight out of my chest.
I stood there by the bench, frozen, my hands still gripping the railing.
And after the first few sentences, I couldn't stop the tears.
