Chapter 2: She Was Protecting Me

Alan looked at me for a long moment before he spoke.

"She's afraid you'll love her less if you know."

My heart dropped.

"Alan, that's not possible.

Nothing could make me love Iris less.

Nothing."

"I know that," he said quietly.

"But she doesn't."

I got out of bed.

I needed to go to her right then.

But Alan gently caught my arm.

"Wait.

There's more."

He told me that Iris had found something — months ago.

Something she wasn't supposed to find.

A document.

Hidden at the back of a drawer in my old desk.

I went completely still.

I knew exactly what document he meant.

"She's been carrying this alone since February," Alan said.

"Every time she tried to bring it up with you, she said you looked so happy that she couldn't do it."

My eyes filled.

All those conversations we'd had.

All those nights she'd seemed like she wanted to say something and then didn't.

I'd noticed.

I'd asked.

She'd always smiled and said she was fine.

She wasn't fine.

She'd been protecting me.

Then Alan said one more thing — something that made me reach for the wall to steady myself.

"She doesn't think she's the only one who knows."
