My husband, Alan, and I adopted Iris when she was four, after she lost her family in a terrible accident.

Becoming her parents wasn't always easy.

She'd already been through more than any four-year-old should have to endure, so we knew it would take time for her to feel safe and understand that we weren't going anywhere.

But little by little, we became a family.

Alan was the dad who taught her to ride a bike, helped with math homework, and somehow always knew how to make her laugh when she was upset.

Iris and I were incredibly close too.

As she got older, we'd talk about everything — friends, school, boys, stupid arguments, things she was worried about.

By the time she was 17, I genuinely believed there wasn't much my daughter would be afraid to share with me.

Then one night, Alan stepped into our bedroom after I'd already gone to bed and quietly closed the door behind him.

Something about his expression immediately made me sit up.

"What's wrong?"

He hesitated.

"Iris came to me today.

She told me something, but she made me promise I wouldn't tell you."

I can't even explain how much that hurt.

After everything we'd been through together, and after years of believing Iris knew she could always come to me, hearing that there was something so important she could tell Alan but couldn't bring herself to tell me felt like a punch to the chest.

"What could she possibly tell you that she couldn't tell me?"

Alan sat down beside me.

"She was crying.

She said she's been trying to tell you for a long time, but every time she tried, she couldn't do it."

My mind started going everywhere.

"Alan, you're scaring me.

What is it?"

And when he finally told me what Iris had been carrying all this time, I was too stunned to say a single word.
