"...you are my husband."
Ivan stared at her.
"I'm sorry — what?"
Jessi didn't flinch.
"A temporary arrangement.
Legally binding, privately dissolved once the threat is neutralized.
My brother Marcus has been building a case to have me declared mentally unfit.
If I'm unmarried and visibly weakened, the board will side with him." She tapped the folder.
"You need money.
I need a witness who can't be bought.
This is a transaction.
Nothing more."
Ivan's hands were shaking.
"You want me to lie to your entire company."
"I want you to stand next to me and say nothing that isn't true." Her eyes were ice.
"You did serve.
You are loyal.
You do have a sick daughter.
None of that is a lie."
He looked down at Fiona's medical file.
Her name handwritten at the top.
Her dosage schedule highlighted in yellow.
"How long?" he asked quietly.
"Ninety days.
Maybe less."
He reached for the briefcase handle — then stopped.
Because the office door opened behind him.
A man in a sharp grey suit stepped inside without knocking.
He looked at Ivan, then at the briefcase, then at Jessi — and smiled slowly.
"Well," the man said.
"This is interesting."
Jessi's expression didn't change.
But her knuckles went white against the desk.
