Chapter 1: The Price of One Wrong Door

"I accidentally stepped into the office of the most powerful woman in the company and discovered her secret.
I thought she would fire me, but the next day she placed 85,000 dollars on the table and made me an offer that changed my daughter's life.
PART 1
The next morning, Ivan's employee badge still opened the building's front doors.
For a few fleeting minutes, he convinced himself that the danger from the night before was just a bad dream.
He hoped that Jessi Sterling—the most ruthless, powerful executive at Sterling & Vance Global—would spare the invisible janitor who had accidentally stumbled upon her darkest secret.
Then his supervisor appeared, his face as pale as a sheet of paper.
"Ivan, drop the mop.
They're waiting for you upstairs."
Ivan's heart skipped a beat.
"Human Resources?"
The man slowly shook his head, his eyes full of pity.
"No.
Mrs.
Sterling.
She's waiting for you in her personal office."
Riding the executive elevator up to the 50th floor, Ivan's chest tightened.
Last night, when he accidentally pushed open those heavy oak doors, he had seen the "Iron Queen" of the corporate world struggling, drenched in sweat, desperately trying to unbuckle a heavy metal orthopedic brace around her ribs.
She had been hiding the severe aftermath of her highly publicized car accident, and he was the only one who knew the truth.
"Close that door and forget you ever saw me, or by tomorrow no one in this city will ever hire you again!" Her icy threat still echoed in his mind.
If he lost his job, he'd be evicted.
If he lost his health insurance, Fiona—his seven-year-old daughter—would lose the specialized asthma medication keeping her alive.
His entire world was about to collapse because of one careless mistake.
The elevator doors chimed open.
Ivan dragged his feet into the massive penthouse office, bracing himself for the end of his livelihood.
Jessi sat behind her mahogany desk, her tailored suit immaculate, completely masking the vulnerability he had witnessed hours ago.
But she didn't hand him a termination letter.
Instead, Jessi slid a thick manila folder across the polished wood.
Glancing down, Ivan was stunned to see his entire life laid bare: his military discharge papers, his credit card debts, Fiona's medical records, and his final eviction notice.
Next to the folder, she placed a sleek black briefcase.
She snapped the locks open.
Inside were thick, perfectly banded stacks of crisp hundred-dollar bills.
"Eighty-five thousand dollars," Jessi stated, her voice smooth but terrifyingly authoritative.
"Enough to wipe out your debts, move you to a luxury apartment, and cover the best private specialists for your daughter."
Ivan swallowed hard, his bewildered eyes fixed on the cash.
"What...
what do you want me to do?
If this is hush money, I swear on my life I won't breathe a word about your condition..."
Jessi's lips curved into a cold, calculating smile.
"I don't need a silent janitor, Ivan.
I did my research on your military background.
Someone in my own family is trying to destroy me.
I need a pawn, an unbreakable shield, and a flawless performance."
She stood up, leaning her weight heavily on the desk to hide a wince of pain.
"You are not fired.
Instead, starting from this exact moment..."
