Chapter 3: The Name in the Corner

The name Naomi said was Clifford.
Rachel's hand was still flat against the wall.
She did not push off from it.
She used it the way you use something when the floor has become uncertain.
"Say that again," Detective Cole said.
"Clifford Marsh." Naomi kept her eyes on her notepad.
"He's listed as the emergency contact on Emma's pediatric file.
Not Rachel.
Not Vanessa.
Him."
Rachel turned slowly toward Vanessa.
"You changed her emergency contact."
"I updated the family records," Vanessa said.
"That is a completely normal administrative —"
"Clifford Marsh has a restraining order against him," Rachel said.
"Filed fourteen months ago.
He is not permitted within three hundred feet of Emma."
The room went very still.
Vanessa's jaw moved once, then stopped.
She looked at the door, then at Detective Cole, then at a fixed point on the wall that had nothing on it.
"I don't know anything about a restraining order," she said.
"You signed the witness acknowledgment," Rachel said.
"Page three.
Your signature is on it."
Denise set Rachel's phone carefully on the table between them, screen up.
She did not say anything.
She did not need to.
Vanessa looked at the phone.
She looked at Detective Cole.
She looked at Rachel.
"I want to speak to someone from my family before I say anything else."
"You are speaking to someone from your family," Rachel said.
"You're speaking to me."
Detective Cole pulled a chair from the wall and set it beside the table.
Not an invitation.
A boundary.
"Mrs.
Marsh," she said, "I need you to sit down."
Vanessa did not sit immediately.
She stood for three full seconds with her hands at her sides, and in those three seconds her face moved through something that was not quite fear and not quite anger and landed somewhere Rachel had never seen on her before.
Then she sat.
Naomi turned a page in her notepad.
"The pediatric file was updated on a Tuesday.
Emma was admitted on a Friday.
The gap is seventy-two hours."
"Meaning someone knew," Denise said quietly.
"Meaning someone planned," Naomi said.
Rachel looked at her daughter's name written in Naomi's notes.
Four letters.
She had counted them before.
She counted them again now.
"Where is Clifford Marsh at this moment?" Detective Cole asked.
Vanessa said nothing.
"Mrs.
Marsh."
"I don't know where he is."
"When did you last speak to him?"
A pause that was one second too long.
"I don't remember."
Detective Cole's pen stopped moving.
She looked up from her own notepad.
"You don't remember."
"It may have been last week.
It may have been longer.
I don't track his schedule."
"But you updated his contact status on your granddaughter's hospital file three days before she was injured."
Vanessa's hands were in her lap.
One of them had closed into a loose fist.
"I told you.
I was updating family records."
"With the name of a man under a restraining order."
"I was not aware —"
"You signed the acknowledgment," Rachel said again.
Her voice had not risen once.
That was the thing that made it so hard to sit across from.
"Page three.
Your signature."
Vanessa looked at the phone on the table.
"I'd like that removed from the room."
"It's already been logged," Denise said.
"Removing it doesn't change that."
The fist in Vanessa's lap tightened.
Detective Cole stood.
"I'm going to step out and make a call.
Ms.
Denise, I'd ask you to stay.
Rachel —" she paused at the door — "don't leave the building."
Rachel nodded.
The door closed.
The fluorescent hum returned.
Somewhere down the hall a cart rolled past.
Emma was two floors up, sedated, her breathing measured by a machine that did not know her name.
Vanessa looked at Rachel across the table.
"You have no idea," she said softly, "what you are starting."
Rachel looked back at her.
"I know exactly what I'm finishing."
Then Denise's phone buzzed.
She looked at the screen.
Her expression did not change, but her hand went flat on the table the way hands do when the body needs to hold onto something solid.
"What is it?" Rachel asked.
Denise turned the phone so Rachel could read it.
The message was from Detective Cole.
It had been sent thirty seconds ago, from the hallway just outside.
*Clifford Marsh was seen entering the hospital fourteen minutes ago.
