Chapter 3: The Man at the Door

Daniel looked at the message again.

*She's not yours.

And he's outside.*

He walked to the front window and pulled the curtain back one inch.

A black car sat at the curb.

Engine off.

The driver's door opened slowly, and the man from the newspaper stepped out.

Older.

Expensive coat.

Silver hair combed back.

He moved like someone who had never once been told no.

Daniel turned around.

"He's here."

Claire didn't move toward the door.

She didn't reach for her phone.

She stood exactly where she was, hands at her sides, watching Daniel with that same cold expression.

"Let me explain before you do something you'll regret."

"Explain what?

Who sent me that message?"

"I don't know."

"You don't know." Daniel's voice was flat.

"A stranger texts me that my daughter isn't mine, and you don't know."

"Daniel—"

The doorbell rang.

Lily appeared at the top of the stairs, bunny tucked under one arm.

She looked down at both of them without saying a word.

Daniel looked up at her.

"Go to your room, sweetheart.

Close the door."

She didn't argue.

Her small feet padded back down the hallway.

The door clicked shut.

Daniel crossed to the front door and opened it.

The man was taller in person.

Late sixties.

Eyes that moved quickly — to Daniel's face, past his shoulder, scanning the hallway behind him.

"You must be Daniel," the man said.

His voice was smooth.

Practiced.

"I don't know who you are," Daniel said.

"My name is Robert Hale." He said it the way people say names they expect to be recognized.

"I think it's time we spoke."

"About what?"

Robert's eyes moved to Claire, who had appeared silently in the hallway behind Daniel.

"About the arrangement," Robert said.

Daniel turned to look at Claire.

Her face had changed.

The cold composure was still there, but underneath it something had cracked — just slightly.

Just enough.

"What arrangement?" Daniel said.

Neither of them answered immediately.

Robert reached into his coat and produced a folded envelope.

He held it out toward Daniel.

"Everything is in there.

I had hoped this conversation would happen differently.

Under better circumstances." He paused.

"But your daughter said something this morning she wasn't supposed to say."

Daniel didn't take the envelope.

"How do you know what my daughter said this morning?"

Robert glanced at Claire again.

A beat of silence passed between them — the kind that carried years inside it.

"Because Claire called me," Robert said.

"Twenty minutes ago.

From the driveway."

Daniel turned back to his wife.

Claire met his eyes.

She didn't deny it.

"Take the envelope, Daniel," she said quietly.

"It's better if you read it first."

He looked at the envelope in Robert's outstretched hand.

White.

Sealed.

His name was written on the front in handwriting he didn't recognize.

He took it.

He didn't open it.

"You have ten minutes," he said.

"Both of you.

Inside.

And then I want answers — not envelopes."

May you like

He stepped back from the door.

Robert Hale walked into Daniel's house for what Daniel would later realize was not the first time.
