Chapter 2: Don't Ask Questions You're Not Ready to Hear
The front door opened.
Daniel's wife, Claire, stepped into the hallway.
She stopped when she saw his face.
"You're home early," she said.
Her voice was calm.
Too calm.
Daniel held up the newspaper.
"Who is this man?"
Claire's eyes dropped to the photograph.
Something shifted behind them — just for a second.
"I don't know what you mean."
"Lily told me he comes here.
When I'm at work."
Claire looked sharply at Lily.
The little girl pressed her bunny against her face.
"She's seven, Daniel.
She doesn't understand what she's saying."
"Then explain it to me."
Silence.
Daniel stepped closer.
"She said you told her never to tell me.
Those were your words to our daughter.
Never tell Daddy."
Claire set her bag down slowly.
"You're overreacting."
"She said he's coming here today."
Claire said nothing.
"And she was about to tell me something else." Daniel's voice dropped.
"Something about who she really is."
Claire's jaw tightened.
"Don't."
"Don't what?"
She looked at him with something he had never seen in her eyes before.
Not guilt.
Not fear.
Something colder.
"Don't ask questions you're not ready to hear the answer to."
Then Daniel's phone buzzed on the table.
He glanced down.
An unknown number.
One message.
*"She's not yours.
And he's outside."*
