Chapter 1: The Night She Wore a Cage

Her Husband Sl\*pped His Pregnant Wife Into a Glass Donor Wall at a Dallas Hospital Gala—He Called Her "Foster Trash" and Ordered the Staff to Hide Her Bruises Before the Family's New Creditor Arrived, Never Knowing She Had Hidden Her Brother's Name to Prevent a War—The Mafia Boss Entered With Forty Tattooed Guards, Called Her "Little Sister," and Ordered Doctors to Document Every Injury Before He Foreclosed on Her Husband's Family.
The crystal chandeliers of the Dallas Memorial Hospital atrium cast a blinding, expensive light across the diamond-studded crowd.
Elena Vance, seven months pregnant, stood in the corner of the grand hall, her hands resting protectively over her swollen abdomen.
She was struggling to breathe through the tight, corseted maternity gown her husband, Julian, had forced her to wear.
"Stop looking so miserable," Julian hissed, his fingers suddenly digging into her bare bicep like steel claws.
He smelled of scotch and desperate panic.
"Julian, you're hurting me," Elena whispered, trying to pull away without drawing the attention of the surrounding billionaires and hospital board members.
"You're embarrassing me," he snarled, his grip tightening until her skin burned.
"My family is about to lose everything tonight if this new creditor doesn't give us an extension, and you're standing here looking like a pathetic stray."
"I just need to sit down," Elena pleaded, her legs shaking from exhaustion and the dull ache in her lower back.
"Please."
"You don't sit until I say you sit!"
Julian didn't just yell.
He lunged.
The back of his heavy, gold-ringed hand collided with the side of Elena's face with a sickening, wet crack that echoed over the string quartet.
Elena's vision exploded into white stars.
The force of the blow lifted her feet off the marble floor.
She spun backward, her arms flying up instinctively to shield her unborn child, and crashed spine-first into the massive, floor-to-ceiling glass donor wall.
The heavy glass groaned under the impact.
Elena collapsed to the polished floor, her knees striking the marble with a sharp thud.
A warm, thick trail of bl\*\*d immediately began running down her temple, dripping onto the pristine white silk of her gown.
Her ear rang with a high-pitched scream, and the left side of her face went entirely numb.
Around them, the elite crowd of Dallas high society gasped.
A few women covered their mouths, but not a single man stepped forward.
They simply stared.
Julian loomed over her, straightening his tuxedo cuffs, his face twisted in utter disgust.
"You're nothing but ungrateful foster trash," Julian spat, his voice carrying through the silent atrium.
He turned to the hospital's Chief of Staff, who was standing completely frozen nearby.
"Get her up.
Take her to a back room and clean her up.
Hide those bruises.
Our new creditor is arriving in twenty minutes, and I will not let this useless woman ruin my family's last chance at survival."
Through her blurred, tear-filled vision, Elena clutched her agonizing stomach.
But as she looked past Julian's polished leather shoes, she saw a convoy of matte-black SUVs pulling up to the valet stand outside the glass doors.
