Chapter 2: The Bracelet in the Bowl

"Has anyone actually searched the room?" Daniel asked.
Vanessa blinked.
"I — of course.
We looked everywhere."
"Where exactly?"
She gestured vaguely at the sitting room.
"The table.
The sofa.
Around the chairs."
Daniel walked past her without another word.
He checked under the side table.
Behind the cushions.
Along the windowsill.
Then he lifted the small decorative bowl near the door.
The bracelet was sitting inside it.
The room went completely silent.
Grace hadn't moved.
Vanessa's face shifted — just for a second — before the tears came back.
"I must have set it down without thinking.
I was so upset, I —"
"You told me it was gone," Daniel said quietly.
"I was panicking."
"You were crying."
"Daniel —"
"Grace." He turned to her.
"I'm sorry."
Grace looked at him for a long moment.
"Thank you, Mr.
Whitfield."
She picked up her cleaning cloth and walked back toward the kitchen.
But Daniel stood there, watching Vanessa's hands.
They weren't shaking the way hands shake when someone is relieved.
They were still.
Controlled.
And then his phone buzzed.
A message from a number he didn't recognize.
Three words.
*Ask her why.*
