Chapter 2: Four Words from Richard

The call connected on the first ring.

"Richard," I said quietly.

"Pull up the aircraft registry for Flight 214.

Then call the board."

A pause.

Then Richard's voice, careful and low: "Are you sure?"

"I'm sure."

I ended the call and sat back down in my seat.

The captain hadn't moved.

He was still standing in the aisle, arms crossed, jaw tight.

Two flight attendants watched from the galley doorway, neither of them speaking.

"Ma'am, I told you—"

"You told me to move to the back of my own plane," I said.

"I heard you the first time."

His eyes narrowed.

"Your own plane."

"Check the ownership documents," I said.

"They're filed under my name.

They have been for eleven years."

Something shifted in his face.

Not quite belief.

Not quite fear.

Something between the two.

He glanced back at the attendants.

One of them had already slipped away toward the cockpit.

The other stood very still, holding a clipboard against her chest.

Then my phone buzzed.

I looked down at the screen.

It was a message from Richard — just four words.

*He knows who you are.*

I looked up slowly at the captain.

His face had gone from red to white.
