Chapter 1: The Woman He Didn't See

"He told me to get up and move to the back of my own plane.

He also told me to shut my mouth.

What he didn't know was that I was the woman who owned the jet.

I had flown a hundred flights on that aircraft and never once been asked who I was.

That morning I wanted to ride as an ordinary passenger, so I wore my green suit, sat in the cabin with my leather briefcase beside me, and quietly read through the pages for the day's meetings.

Sunlight poured through the windows onto the cream carpet, and for a few minutes it felt like any other peaceful morning.

Then the captain stepped down the aisle in his navy uniform with the gold stripes on his shoulders.

He looked at me as if I were a stain on his upholstery.

"Get up!

Move to the back!"

I didn't move.

I held his gaze and answered as gently as I would speak to a child.

"You should verify my name."

His face went red.

He leaned in so close I could smell his coffee.

"Shut your mouth up!"

I didn't raise my voice, and I didn't argue.

I stood slowly, took my phone out from beside the briefcase, lifted it to my ear, and turned toward the front of the cabin.

Behind me, the captain frowned, no longer entirely sure of himself.
