Chapter 1: The Name She Was Never Supposed to Say

"He discovered a baby living secretly inside his penthouse, but instead of firing the terrified housekeeper, he asked who had taught her to be so afraid of him.

"Whose baby is this?"

Alessandro Duca's voice stopped me cold.

I turned toward the doorway of his private office, and the laundry basket nearly slipped from my fingers.

My eight-month-old daughter was sitting on the marble floor at his feet.

Smiling.

Worse, Mia had both tiny hands wrapped around Alessandro's black silk tie, tugging at the most feared man in Manhattan as if she wanted him to pick her up.

"Mia…" My voice cracked.

For ninety days, I had hidden my daughter inside Alessandro Duca's penthouse.

Now my secret was sitting at his feet.

"How did she get here?" he asked.

"The laundry room."

His gaze sharpened.

"How long has she been there?"

"Three minutes."

Then came the question I had dreaded for months.

"How long has your daughter been coming into my home?"

I could have lied.

Today.

Just today.

A childcare emergency.

A misunderstanding.

Instead, I looked at Mia and whispered, "Three months."

Something flickered across Alessandro's face.

"You hid a baby in my penthouse for three months?"

"Yes."

I expected security.

I expected to be fired.

I needed this job.

Mia needed formula and medicine.

My rent was overdue, and the emergency envelope in my apartment held only $480, barely enough for seventeen days.

So every morning, I hid Mia in a small corner of the laundry room with a folded blanket, diapers, toys, and a bottle warmer tucked behind the towels.

Not because I wanted to deceive him.

Because I was terrified of losing the only stable thing we had.

"Who knows?" Alessandro asked.

"Raymond.

The doorman."

"Who else?"

"Lucia downstairs.

Sometimes Rosa at the market."

"Why did they help you?"

"Because I needed to work," I whispered.

"Mia had nowhere else safe to go."

Silence settled over the hallway.

Then Alessandro did something no one in that building would have believed.

He crouched beside my daughter.

Mia reached for him again.

He didn't pull away.

Instead, his eyes moved past her, toward the blanket in the laundry room, the diapers hidden behind cleaning supplies, the bottle warmer concealed beneath the towels.

His expression changed.

Not anger.

Realization.

Then he slowly looked at me.

"Elena," he said, his voice suddenly quieter, "who told you that you weren't allowed to bring your daughter into this home?"

My bl\*\*d turned cold.

Because suddenly I understood.

He wasn't asking why Mia was there.

He wanted to know who had made me so afraid of him that I'd hidden my baby for ninety days.

And the name sitting on the tip of my tongue was the one name I had prayed I would never have to say.

---

What will Elena say next — and who is the name she's been too afraid to speak?
