Chapter 2: The Woman in the Photograph

⬇️ PART 2 ⬇️

Sebastian didn't answer right away.

He turned to the security man on his left.

Something passed between them — not words.

Just a look.

The kind that meant something had already been understood.

The man stepped back and made a phone call.

Clarissa grabbed Sebastian's arm.

"What is happening right now?"

He didn't look at her.

"Sebastian." Her voice sharpened.

"Who are these children?"

"Not now, Clarissa."

"Don't you dare say not now—"

"I said not now."

She went silent.

So did everyone else.

Sebastian turned back to me.

His voice was low and careful, the way you speak when you're trying not to fall apart in public.

"Maya, I need you to think carefully.

The security director — did he give you his name?"

"He didn't have to.

Your grandfather introduced him to me once.

At a charity dinner.

Before everything fell apart."

Sebastian closed his eyes for exactly two seconds.

"His name," I said.

"Was Harlan."

Something shifted in Sebastian's face that I had no name for.

Owen tugged my sleeve.

"Mommy, why is that man sad?"

I looked down at my son.

Then I looked at Sebastian.

And for the first time in four years, I wasn't sure which version of the truth I had been living inside.

Sebastian's phone buzzed.

He glanced at the screen.

His face went completely still.

"What is it?" I asked.

He turned the phone toward me.

It was a photograph.

Old.

Slightly blurred.

A woman standing in the lobby of Vale Tower.

Visibly pregnant.

Holding an envelope.

And next to her — not Harlan — someone else entirely.

Who is the woman in that photograph — and what does it mean for everything Maya believed?

The full truth is darker than either of them expected.
