Chapter 2: What the Light Revealed

Nora's eyes went wide.
Not with fear.
With relief.
"Yes," she whispered.
"It moves when the light comes."
The room went completely still.
Sarah didn't look at the doctors.
She didn't look at Daniel.
She reached slowly for the otoscope on the tray — the one she had brought herself — and angled it gently, without touching Nora's ear at all.
One look.
She pulled back.
Her face had changed.
"I need Dr.
Caldwell in here right now," she said.
Quietly.
Carefully.
The way you speak when you do not want a child to understand what you just saw.
Caldwell stepped in.
Sarah handed him the scope without a word and pointed.
He looked.
When he straightened up, he didn't speak for a full three seconds.
"Get ENT on the phone.
Not the resident.
The attending.
And someone get the microsurgery tray."
Daniel's hand pressed flat against the glass.
"What is it?
What's in her ear?"
Caldwell turned toward him — and that was when Sarah said the thing that made every person in that room go cold.
"Admiral Mercer…
how long has Nora been in the care of her babysitter?"
Daniel stared at her.
"What does that have to do with—"
"How long," Sarah said again.
Gently.
But she did not look away.
