Chapter 4: The Name on the Wrong Line

The paramedics arrived and tried to move me to the ambulance.

I told them I would go in five minutes.

The younger one — a woman with a calm, practiced face — pressed a fresh bandage against my temple and did not argue.

Torres came back into the dining room.

He had a second officer with him now, someone I hadn't seen before.

Plain clothes.

He showed his identification to Charles without being asked.

"Detective Hale," he said.

"I understand there's been a request to access the lower level of the premises."

Charles straightened.

"I want to speak to my attorney before anyone goes anywhere in this house."

"You're welcome to make that call," Hale said.

"But your daughter-in-law has reported a domestic @ssault, there is visible evidence of injury, and we have a witness directing us to a specific location in the residence.

That changes the timeline a little."

"This is harassment," Charles said.

"My son made one mistake tonight—"

"He str*ck me with a plate," I said.

"In front of twenty people."

Charles turned to me.

For the first time all evening, he looked at me as though he was genuinely seeing me.

"Claire," he said.

"You don't understand what you're doing."

"Then explain it to me."

He said nothing.

I turned to Maya.

She was seated now, at the far end of the table, a glass of water in front of her that no one had poured for her.

She must have gotten it herself.

"The documents you found," I said.

"Where are they now?"

"I photographed everything," she said.

"The photos are in cloud storage.

I sent the link to my sister two weeks ago with instructions to forward it to the police if she didn't hear from me by the end of this month."

Adrian's head came up.

"You did what?"

"I was careful," Maya said simply.

"I learned from watching this family.

You plan ahead.

So did I."

Eleanor stepped forward.

Her composure had returned — not fully, but enough.

Her voice was measured.

"Maya, I understand you feel that you have grievances.

We all have grievances.

But what you are doing tonight will destroy this family.

Do you understand that?

Everything.

The business.

The children's futures.

Everything."

"The business," Maya repeated.

"Yes."

"You mean the business that Adrian has been running at a loss for two years while telling everyone it was profitable?" Maya reached into her cardigan again and placed a folded piece of paper on the table.

"Or the business that has my husband's name on the liability documents but not on the profit accounts?"

Eleanor did not touch the paper.

Hale stepped forward and looked at it without picking it up.

He took a photograph with his phone.

"Where did you get this?" Charles asked.

His voice had gone very quiet.

"Daniel left it in the printer," Maya said.

"Eight months ago.

He didn't realize I was home."

Daniel.

Adrian's brother.

Maya's husband.

The man who had been absent from this dinner without explanation.

"Where is Daniel tonight?" I asked.

Maya looked at her water glass.

"He's been staying at his parents' house," she said.

"For the past six weeks."

I looked at Eleanor.

"You knew he was there."

Eleanor said nothing.

"You had both of them under your roof," I said.

"You were managing both situations at the same time."

"I was protecting my family," Eleanor said.

"From what?"

She looked at me with something close to contempt.

"From people like you.

Who come into this family and take and take and then act wounded when asked to contribute."

"I was asked to hand over my home and pay twenty-eight hundred dollars a month," I said.

"And when I said no, your son str*ck me with a dinner plate."

"He lost his temper—"

"Eleanor." Hale's voice was not loud, but it stopped her.

"I'm going to need you to save that for your statement."

He turned to Torres and said something I couldn't hear.

Torres nodded and moved toward the basement door.

Charles stepped forward.

"You need a warrant."

"We have exigent circumstances," Hale said.

"A reported @ssault, a witness directing us to a specific location, and a key that was voluntarily provided." He paused.

"Unless you'd like to tell me right now what's down there.

That would save everyone some time."

Charles looked at Adrian.

Adrian looked at the floor.

Torres unlocked the padlock with Maya's key.

The door swung open.

A set of wooden stairs descended into darkness.

He reached for the light switch.

The bulb at the bottom flickered on.

He took three steps down and stopped.

"Hale," he called up.

"You need to come see this."

The detective went down.

The room above stayed silent for a long moment.

When Hale came back up, his expression had not changed.

May you like

But he looked directly at Charles and said four words.

"Don't let anyone leave."
