Chapter 2: Six Words That Opened Everything

The police arrived before anyone could stop them.

Two officers stepped through the front door.

They saw me immediately — the napkin pressed to my head, the bl00d on the tablecloth, the broken porcelain still scattered across the table.

"Ma'am, are you injured?"

"Yes," I said.

"My husband str*ck me."

Adrian moved forward.

"Officers, this is a private family matter—"

"Sir.

Stay where you are."

He stopped.

For the first time all evening, someone had told him no and he actually listened.

One officer guided me toward the hallway.

The other stayed with Adrian.

Eleanor followed us.

"She provoked him.

You have to understand the full situation—"

The officer turned to her.

"Ma'am, I need you to step back."

She opened her mouth.

Then closed it.

Maya had not moved from her spot near the table.

Her hands were clasped tightly in front of her.

Her eyes were fixed on the floor near the basement door.

I looked at the officer beside me.

"There is something in the basement," I said quietly.

"Someone in this room told me to ask you to check it."

The room went completely still.

Charles stood up so fast his chair tipped backward.

"There is nothing down there.

This is our home and you have no right—"

"Sir." The officer's voice was firm.

"Please sit down."

Adrian turned to Maya.

His voice dropped to almost nothing.

"What did you tell her?"

May you like

Maya's hands began to shake.

But she did not look away.
