Chapter 1: The Price of Obedience

"Every month, I sent my mother-in-law 30,000 dollars “for her expenses,” but postponing just one payment was enough for her to sl@p me so hard that she split my lip.

“In this family, you obey,” she screamed.

I didn’t cry or argue.

I took out my phone, canceled the cards, and saved a recording.

She still had no idea what she had just set in motion.

PART 1

“Where are my thirty thousand dollars?

Today is the tenth.

Don’t tell me you’re going to leave your mother-in-law without money because of your little whims.”

Gwen’s voice rang through the living room before Sienna could even take off her heels.

Outside, the July heat bore down on Phoenix like a blazing iron.

Inside, the air conditioner was running at full power, paid for, of course, with Sienna’s card.

Gwen sat at the glass table wearing a new silk outfit, her nails freshly done.

Everything about her looked like it had been paid for by someone else.

And that someone was Sienna.

For almost five years, Sienna had transferred thirty thousand dollars into her mother-in-law’s account every month “for her expenses.” That didn’t include food, electricity, water, internet, or medication.

Sienna paid for those too.

The thirty thousand was for beauty salons, lunches with friends, clothes, gifts for Gwen’s daughter, and trips that the woman later bragged about as if they had come out of her own wallet.

Sienna worked as a project director for an international company.

She earned good money, but it wasn’t because money simply fell from the sky.

Her life centered around meetings, airports, late-night calls, and impossible deadlines.

At first, she chose to help her husband’s family because she believed it would keep the peace.

She was wrong.

“This month, I had a cash-flow problem,” she said, placing her purse on a chair.

“I’m not going to transfer anything today.

We’ll figure out how to handle it next month.”

Gwen’s eyes opened wide as if she had just heard a blasphemy.

“What do you mean, you’re not?

You married into this family to respect your elders.

I’m Christian’s mother.

If I have to ask you for money like I’m begging for alms, what are my friends going to say?”

“They can say that your personal expenses aren’t my responsibility.”

The silence lasted only two seconds.

Gwen started insulting her.

She mocked her parents, said Sienna thought she was superior because she earned more than Christian, and even reminded her that her son had been “such a good man” for marrying a thirty-four-year-old woman who worked too much.

Sienna didn’t raise her voice.

“The dress you’re wearing cost twelve hundred dollars.

I paid for the trip to Miami last month too.

Your daughter’s spa membership comes out of my card.

I’m not an endless source of money.”

Gwen moved toward her, trembling with rage.

“You ungrateful woman.”

Then she sl@pped her.

The impact was so hard that Sienna tasted metal in her mouth.

Her lip split open.

For years, she had swallowed humiliation to avoid “breaking up the family.” But that sl@p broke something different.

Sienna lifted her eyes.

Gwen lifted her hand again.

This time, Sienna caught it and, in the struggle, pushed her away.

Gwen lost her balance and fell onto the carpet, knocking over a cup.

“She att@cked me!” she screamed immediately.

“Christian is going to find out what kind of woman you are!”

The door opened at that exact moment.

Christian stepped in, saw his mother on the floor and his wife’s bl3eding lip.

He didn’t ask what had happened.

He l*nged straight at Sienna.

And in that moment, she realized that her mother-in-law’s sl@p was not the worst thing that was going to happen that day."
