Chapter 6: The Offer He Thought She Couldn't Refuse

Richard didn't wait long.

Two days after the meeting in Grace's office, a man Elena had never seen before appeared at the reception desk of the building where she'd set up a temporary workspace.

He was polished and unhurried and he handed the receptionist a sealed envelope addressed to Elena by name.

Inside was a single typed page and a cashier's check.

The page read: *In the interest of resolving the matter of the private holding account without further disruption to the family or the company, I am prepared to offer a one-time settlement of fifteen million dollars, to be transferred within five business days upon receipt of a signed agreement to release all claims.

This offer expires in forty-eight hours.

The cashier's check was made out to her.

Fifteen million dollars.

She photographed both and sent them to Grace.

Grace called within four minutes.

"He's scared."

"I know."

"Fifteen million is less than half of what he's already moved.

He's offering you a fraction and asking you to walk away from the rest."

"I know that too."

"What do you want to do?"

Elena set the check on the desk in front of her.

Fifteen million dollars.

Six months ago, before her father's illness, before the divorce, before any of this — that number would have felt impossible.

Life-changing.

The kind of number that ended problems.

"I want to know what the Hargrove situation is," she said.

"Before I do anything else."

"I've been looking into it," Grace said.

"Hargrove was a land development deal your father was involved in — about thirteen years ago.

There were allegations at the time of a zoning irregularity.

A local official was investigated but never charged.

The case went quiet."

"Was my father implicated?"

A pause.

"His name appeared in the initial inquiry.

It was never pursued."

"Because Richard made it go away?"

"That's one possibility."

Elena was quiet for a moment.

"Or because Richard was the one who created the irregularity and used it to implicate my father — so he'd have leverage."

"Also possible," Grace said.

"We'd need to find the original case file."

"Can you?"

"I already have someone on it."

Elena looked at the check again.

Then she picked it up, walked to the shredder in the corner of the room, and fed it through.

"Tell Richard the offer is declined," she said.

"And Grace — I want everything ready.

When we move, I want to move completely."

That evening, Marcus called.

She almost didn't answer.

Then she did.

"I heard you're going after Richard," he said.

No greeting.

"Where did you hear that?"

"He called me." A pause.

"He wanted to know if I had any documentation from our marriage.

Financial records.

Anything with your father's name on it."

Elena sat very still.

"What did you tell him?"

"I told him I'd think about it." Another pause — longer this time.

"Elena, I'm not going to help him.

I want you to know that."

"Why are you telling me?"

"Because—" He stopped.

Started again.

"Because whatever I did, whatever happened between us — your father was a good man.

And what Richard is doing is wrong." His voice was quieter now.

"I also think you're going to win.

And I'd rather not be on the wrong side of that."

"That's very practical of you, Marcus."

"I know." He didn't try to dress it up.

"I also know I don't deserve anything from you.

I'm not asking for anything.

I just — I thought you should know he's reaching out to people.

He's building something.

You should be careful."

The line went quiet.

"Marcus," she said.

"Did Richard know about us?

Before the affair?

Did he know about Chloe?"

A long silence.

"He introduced us," Marcus said.

"Chloe and me.

About eight months ago.

He said she was a friend of a friend.

I didn't think anything of it at the time."

Elena closed her eyes.

"He set it up," she said.

Not a question.

"I think so.

Yes."

She opened her eyes.

Outside the window, the city was settling into evening, lights coming on in the buildings across the street.

"Thank you for telling me," she said.

And she meant it — not warmly, but honestly.

She ended the call and sat in the quiet for a moment.

Then she called Grace.

"Richard introduced Marcus to Chloe," she said.

"He engineered the affair.

He needed the divorce to happen so Marcus could claim part of the company transfer — and split it with Richard afterward."

Grace was silent for three full seconds.

"He was going to use Marcus as a proxy."

"Yes."

"Elena — that changes the scope of this significantly.

That's not just financial misconduct.

That's a coordinated scheme."

May you like

"I know," Elena said.

"Add it to the file."
