Chapter 2: Something Colder Than Fear

Ryan's hand stopped mid-air.
He looked at his mother.
Then at me.
Then back at her.
"Mom.
Why are you telling me not to open it?"
Margaret wiped her eyes fast.
"I just — I don't want you thinking I did something wrong.

The water was running.
"Mom — stop."
She didn't stop.
Ryan crossed the kitchen in three steps and grabbed the plate from her hands.
She looked at him with something I had never seen on her face before.
Not guilt.
Not fear.
Something colder than both.
"You don't know what you're doing," she said.
"Then tell me," Ryan said.
"Right now.
Tell me what was in that bottle."
Margaret said nothing.
And that silence told him everything.

What Ryan found on that camera footage left him shaking.
What Margaret was hiding was worse than anyone imagined.
