Chapter 2: The Envelope He Didn't Want to Open

The living room looked nothing like he'd left it.
My sister was seated on the couch, holding two of the babies.
My mother was in the armchair with the third.
Suitcases and boxes were stacked near the hallway.
And I was standing in the middle of it all, completely calm, with divorce papers on the coffee table in front of me.
"What is this?" Eric said, his voice dropping.
"What are you doing?"
"Finishing what you started," I said.
He looked around the room, then back at me.
"You're being dramatic.
I needed a break.
You knew that."
My mother stood up slowly.
She didn't raise her voice.
She just looked at him and said, "She labored for nineteen hours.
You told her to be quiet.
Then you left for Cabo."
Eric's jaw tightened.
"That's not — I was overwhelmed.
It's not like I abandoned anyone."
"The papers are already drawn up," I said.
"I had a lot of time to think while you were getting your tan."
He stepped toward me.
"You're not serious.
We have three kids.
You can't just—"
"I didn't do this alone," I said.
"Check the envelope under the papers."
He froze.
His eyes dropped to the table.
He hadn't noticed the envelope until that moment.
And from the look on his face, he already knew he didn't want to open it.
