Chapter 4: The Call Naomi Almost Didn't Answer

Naomi was in the middle of a school pickup line when her phone rang.

She almost let it go to voicemail.

Eleanor Mercer's name on the screen was not something she had ever expected to see.

They had not spoken since the wedding.

She answered.

"Naomi." Eleanor's voice was measured.

"I need you to listen to me carefully, and I need you not to panic."

Naomi's hands tightened on the wheel.

"Is Maisie hurt?"

"Maisie is fine.

She's here with me.

She's safe."

"Then what—"

"She told me something today." A pause.

"About Vanessa."

The car behind Naomi honked.

She pulled forward without thinking.

"What did she say?"

Eleanor told her.

All of it.

The seven words first.

Then what came after.

Then the calls to Graham.

The pattern of small, careful concerns, each one landing just right, each one leaving just enough doubt.

Naomi did not speak for a long time.

"How long?" she finally said.

"I don't know exactly.

Long enough that Graham has mentioned his concerns to his father twice in the past three months."

"He never said anything to me."

"No," Eleanor said.

"He wouldn't have.

He thought he was protecting Maisie."

Naomi pulled into a parking space and turned off the engine.

Her hands were still on the wheel.

"Eleanor.

Why are you calling me?"

A beat of silence.

"Because I know what I saw at that wedding," Eleanor said.

"I know what Vanessa did.

And I know what I just heard from my four-year-old granddaughter." Another pause.

"And because you are Maisie's mother.

Whatever happened between you and Graham, that has never changed."

Naomi pressed her fingers against her eyes.

"She's been telling him I don't want her," Naomi said.

The words came out flat.

Like she was still trying to understand them.

"Yes."

"For months."

"Yes."

"And Graham believed her."

Eleanor did not answer immediately.

That silence said everything.

"I need to see Maisie," Naomi said.

"Come now.

Graham won't be here until six.

That gives us time."

"Time for what?"

"To talk," Eleanor said.

"And to decide what we do next.

Together."

Naomi started the car again.

She drove the whole way with both hands on the wheel and her jaw set and her eyes completely dry.

The crying could wait.

Right now she needed to think.

When she arrived, Maisie ran to the door before Naomi had even knocked.

"Mommy."

Naomi dropped to her knees on the front step and held her daughter so tightly that Maisie made a small sound of surprise.

"I'm here," Naomi said into her hair.

"I'm right here."

"Vanessa said you were too busy."

"I know." Naomi pulled back just enough to look at her daughter's face.

"She was wrong.

I will never be too busy for you.

Do you understand me?"

Maisie studied her for a moment with the serious eyes of a child deciding whether to believe something.

Then she nodded.

Eleanor stood in the doorway watching.

She said nothing.

But she stepped back to let them both inside.

And she left her phone on the kitchen counter, screen up, recording.
