Chapter 2: Seven Words From a Four-Year-Old

Part 2 began quietly.

Vanessa didn't rush.

She was patient when it mattered.

The first call to Graham came three weeks later.

"I stopped by to drop off Maisie's jacket," she said, her voice soft with concern.

"Naomi wasn't home.

Maisie was alone in the garden.

She'd been crying."

Graham went silent.

"I'm sure it's nothing," Vanessa added.

"I just thought you should know."

She hung up before he could ask questions.

The second call came a month after that.

Then a third.

Each one small.

Each one careful.

Each one leaving just enough doubt.

But Vanessa made one mistake she didn't see coming.

Maisie was four years old — but she remembered everything.

She remembered the ballroom.

She remembered the sl\*p.

She remembered the way Vanessa had looked at her like she was something that needed to disappear.

And one afternoon, while Vanessa sat in the Mercer living room playing the role of the concerned stepmother, Maisie walked up to Graham's mother and said seven words no one in that room expected.

"She tells Daddy that Mommy doesn't want me."

The room went still.

Graham's mother slowly set down her cup.

And Vanessa felt the air change before she even looked up.
