Chapter 2: The Cut That Wasn't an Accident

They pulled Grace to safety just as her strength gave out completely.
Rosa dragged her back onto the terrace, both of them gasping, Grace clutching her stomach and shaking so hard her teeth chattered.
Rosa kept one arm around her, scanning the area frantically for help.
That's when she looked up.
Eleanor was still on the balcony.
Still watching.
Arms folded.
Not reaching for a phone.
Not calling out.
Not moving a single step toward the door.
Their eyes met.
Eleanor didn't flinch.
"Someone needs to call for help!" Rosa shouted up at her.
"Grace needs a doctor — now!"
Eleanor's expression didn't change.
She looked at Grace the way someone looks at a problem they've already decided isn't theirs to solve.
"She's fine," Eleanor said flatly.
"She's always so dramatic."
Rosa felt something cold move through her that had nothing to do with fear.
Grace grabbed Rosa's arm, her grip surprisingly tight.
"Rosa," she whispered.
"The cable.
It didn't just break."
Rosa turned to look.
The end of the cable was clean.
Too clean.
Not frayed.
Not worn.
Not the kind of break that happens by accident.
Grace's voice dropped even lower.
"Eleanor was out here this morning.
Alone."
