Chapter 2: Don't Trust Anyone

Part 2 ⬇️

Oliver opened his small hand.

Inside was a folded piece of paper.

I took it with shaking fingers and opened it.

Three words, handwritten in black ink:

*"Don't trust anyone."*

The officer beside me went still.

"Ma'am…

did your son speak to anyone else before the waiter approached him?"

"No.

We'd only been seated twenty minutes."

He looked at his partner.

Something passed between them that I didn't understand.

Then the chef pulled the officer aside and said something quietly.

I caught two words.

*Third time.*

"What does that mean?" I demanded.

"Third time WHAT?"

Neither of them answered.

I grabbed the chef's arm.

"This has happened before?"

He wouldn't meet my eyes.

"We're cooperating fully with the investigation—"

"That is NOT an answer!"

Oliver tugged my sleeve.

"Mom." His voice was very small.

"The man said something before he left."

I crouched down.

"What did he say, baby?"

Oliver looked at the note still in my hand.

"He said…

*'Give that to your mom.

She'll know what it means.'*"

The room went cold.

Because the thing is—

I did know.
