Chapter 1: The Waiter Who Wasn't There

A friendly waiter invited my son into the hotel kitchen to make his own pizza — 10 minutes later, the head chef locked every exit.
My eight-year-old son, Oliver, had been OBSESSED with PIZZA since we arrived at the hotel.
So when our waiter noticed him watching the open kitchen, he smiled.
"Want to make your own?"
Oliver's eyes lit up.
"Can I, Mom?"
The waiter explained that children sometimes got quick kitchen tours.
I AGREED.
"Ten minutes.
Then bring him back."
"Promise."
I watched Oliver disappear through the swinging doors.
Five minutes passed.
Then ten.
I was starting to get nervous when the kitchen doors SUDDENLY flew open.
But Oliver wasn't there.
The head chef rushed into the dining room.
His face was WHITE.
"Nobody leaves this restaurant."
Then he ordered the staff to LOCK EVERY EXIT.
Guests immediately started shouting.
I jumped up.
"My son is in your kitchen!"
The chef stared at me.
"Your son?"
"The waiter took him back there!"
"What waiter?"
I pointed toward our table.
"The young man serving us.
Tall, dark hair, name tag said NICK."
The chef's expression shifted completely.
"We don't have a Nick working here."
My knees nearly gave out.
I ran toward the kitchen, but the chef grabbed my arm.
"Wait."
Then one of the cooks shouted from behind the doors.
"CHEF!
We found the boy!"
I tore free and rushed inside.
Oliver was standing beside the walk-in freezer, terrified but unharmed.
I dropped to my knees and hugged him.
"Where's the man who brought you here?"
Oliver pointed toward a narrow service corridor.
"He told me to WAIT."
Police were called immediately.
Then Oliver suddenly remembered something.
"Oh...
he gave me THIS."

What did the stranger give Oliver — and who was "Nick" really?
