Chapter 2: She Was Never Supposed to Be

The woman didn't flinch.

She touched her cheek slowly, then smiled.

That smile made everything worse.

"You think you're her mother?" she said.

"You were never supposed to be."

The little girl was still shaking behind her mother's legs.

Her tiny fingers gripped the fabric of her mother's jeans and wouldn't let go.

"What did you just say to me?"

"I said what everyone in this family has been too afraid to say for four years." The woman stepped closer.

"That little girl doesn't belong to you.

She never did.

And soon enough, she'll know it too."

A car door slammed somewhere behind them.

Footsteps on gravel.

Then a man's voice — low, urgent.

"Stop.

Both of you.

Stop right now."

The mother turned.

Her husband was standing ten feet away.

He wasn't looking at the woman who had left their daughter in that pit.

He was looking at the ground.

And that was when she understood.

He already knew.

He had known the whole time.

The little girl tugged at her mother's sleeve and whispered something so quietly that only she could hear it.

Four words.

Four words that made her mother's knees nearly give out.
