Chapter 2: Four Words Beneath the Insole

The door burst open.
A man Caitlyn had never seen before stood in the frame, a neighbor from two houses down, coughing through the smoke with a fire extinguisher in his hands.
"Is anyone else in here?" he shouted.
Caitlyn couldn't answer.
She was clutching the boot to her chest, her fingers pressed around something small and folded inside it.
He carried her out.
Her mother was standing on the front lawn when they came through the door.
Perfectly still.
Arms crossed.
Watching.
Not running toward her.
Not calling her name.
Just watching.
The neighbor set Caitlyn down on the grass and turned to her mother.
"She was locked in.
The door was locked from the outside."
Her mother's expression didn't change.
"She does that herself," she said calmly.
"She gets confused."
Caitlyn stared at her.
Seven years old, barefoot on the cold grass, still holding the boot.
And she finally opened the folded paper inside it.
It was a name.
A phone number.
And four words written in handwriting she didn't recognize.
*She is not yours.*
Caitlyn looked up at her mother.
Her mother was already looking back at her.
And for the first time in Caitlyn's life, she saw something in her mother's eyes that wasn't coldness.
It was fear.
