Chapter 1: The Night the Door Wouldn't Open

"My sister locked the bedroom door from the outside.
Then the smoke started coming in."
Caitlyn was only seven years old.
Barefoot, crying, and pounding on the door of the bedroom she had grown up in, she screamed for her mother.
"Mommy!
Please!
There's smoke!"
Her mother was standing in the hallway.
She heard every word.
And she turned away.
For years, everyone on Bennett Street believed the Monroe family was perfect.
A beautiful white house.
A respected mother.
A popular older sister.
And one little girl everyone called "difficult."
But Caitlyn knew what happened after the front door closed.
She knew what it felt like to apologize for things she hadn't done.
To be told she was lying when she was telling the truth.
To wonder whether maybe she just wasn't good enough for her own mother to love.
That night, as smoke filled her room and the locked door refused to open, Caitlyn remembered something hidden beneath her bed.
An old brown boot.
And beneath its worn-out insole…
a secret nobody in her family knew existed.
With barely enough air left to breathe, Caitlyn reached for it.
Then something slammed into the other side of the door.
CRASH.
And the lock began to move.
What happened next would shatter the perfect story her mother had spent years building.
---
What was hidden inside that boot — and who was on the other side of that door?
