Chapter 2: What She Knows

Richard stepped into the room and looked at the ruined dress on the floor.

Then he looked at me.

"I'm so sorry," he said.

"That dress belonged to your mother."

I couldn't speak.

My throat was too tight.

"I've already called Eleanor's sister," he continued.

"Eleanor will be staying there tonight.

She will not be at the wedding tomorrow."

I stared at him.

"You can't do that."

"I already did." His voice was calm.

Final.

I heard Eleanor in the hallway, her heels sharp against the floor, getting louder.

She pushed past him into the doorway.

Her face was red.

"You're choosing her over your own wife?

Over a dress?"

Richard didn't turn around.

"Go pack a bag, Eleanor."

"This is MY family!

MY son's wedding!

You have no right—"

"The dress," Richard said quietly, "was irreplaceable.

You knew exactly what you were doing."

Eleanor's eyes cut to me.

Something shifted in them.

Not guilt.

Something colder.

"You think this is over?" she said softly.

"You have no idea what I know about your little family."

Then she walked out.

I looked at Richard.

"What did she mean by that?"

He was quiet for a moment too long.

"Get some rest," he said.

"Tomorrow is your wedding day."

But the way he said it made my stomach drop all over again.
