My MIL tore my late mother's vintage wedding dress the night before the ceremony, smirking, "A cheap girl like you doesn't deserve a designer dress" — but when my FIL found out, what he did made her scream, "You can't do that to me!"

My fiancé, Julian, and I met in college while I was working double shifts to pay off my student loans.

His family comes from wealth, and his mother, Eleanor, constantly reminded me of our different financial backgrounds.

I ignored her snide comments and focused on our future.

I never expected them to fund our wedding, and I certainly didn't want to waste money on a ridiculously expensive new gown.

Instead, I was going to wear my late mother's beautifully preserved, vintage designer wedding dress.

It was my most prized possession, and the one way I could have my mom with me on my big day.

The night before our wedding at Julian's family estate, I went upstairs after dinner and stepped into an absolute nightmare.

Eleanor was standing in the guest room with a pair of heavy fabric scissors.

The beautiful vintage silk of my mother's dress was slashed, completely destroyed beyond repair.

I froze in horror.

Eleanor casually set the scissors onto the bed and smirked.

"A cheap girl like you doesn't deserve a designer dress," she said smoothly.

"Now you'll look exactly like what you are."

Before I could even process the heartbreak, Julian's father, Richard, appeared in the doorway.

He was always a quiet, observant man who rarely involved himself in Eleanor's daily drama.

He didn't yell.

He looked at the ruined heirloom, then at his wife with an unreadable expression.

Then he said softly, "Eleanor, can I speak to you for a moment?"

She gave me one last satisfied look and followed him out of the room, leaving me alone with the shredded remains of the dress I'd treasured more than anything.

Two minutes later, I heard her voice explode from down the hallway.

"You can't do that to me!"

A moment later, Richard appeared in the doorway.
