Chapter 2: The Folder That Was Thicker Than Anyone Noticed

Part 2 ⬇️

The matriarch's voice cracked like a whip across the dining room.

"Sit down.

All of you.

Now."

But no one moved.

Sam's hands were shaking.

He looked down at Eli — really looked at him — taking in the boy's curly hair, the shape of his jaw, the way he tilted his head.

Something deep in Sam's chest split open.

"He has her eyes," Sam whispered.

"He has his mother's eyes."

Lila stepped forward, the photograph still in her hand.

"Sam.

Who was Eli's mother?"

Sam couldn't speak.

He pressed his fist to his mouth, shoulders heaving.

It was Eli who broke the silence.

"She d!ed in the fire," the boy said quietly.

"Didn't she."

It wasn't a question.

The matriarch's face went white.

Her hand shot out and gripped the back of her chair.

"That is enough," she said, her voice low and dangerous.

"This man is the staff.

He has no claim here.

None."

"Then why," Lila said, turning slowly to face her, "is his name on Eli's original birth certificate?"

The folder in Lila's hand was thicker than anyone had noticed.

She pulled out a second document.

Then a third.

The matriarch took one look at what Lila was holding — and sat down without another word.
