Chapter 2: Someone Who Was Never Supposed to Be Forgotten

The bed was covered in papers.

Photographs.

Old letters.

A leather folder I had never seen before.

And in the center of it all — a legal document with Grandma Ruth's signature at the bottom.

"What is this?" I whispered.

Michael stepped in front of it.

Not aggressive.

Just…

deliberate.

"That's between Ruth and me," he said quietly.

"Get out of my way." I moved around him and grabbed the top page.

It was a will.

Not the one I knew about.

A new one.

Dated six weeks ago.

My hands were shaking so hard I could barely read it.

"Grandma." My voice cracked.

"Did you change your will?"

She looked at me — not with guilt.

With something I hadn't expected.

Sadness.

"Sweetheart," she said softly, "there are things about this family you don't know yet."

"What things?

What does that mean?"

She reached out and touched my hand.

"Michael didn't take anything from you.

He helped me give something back…

to someone who was never supposed to be forgotten."

I stared at her.

"Who?" I asked.

"Who are you talking about?"

She opened her mouth —

And Michael's phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His face went pale.

"Ruth," he said carefully.

"It's him."
