Chapter 1: The Locked Door

My 82-year-old grandmother moved her young caregiver into her bedroom — when I learned what they were really doing after 9 p.m., I nearly fell apart.

My grandma Ruth raised me after my parents passed.

She gave me everything she possibly could.

When she got sick, I hired the best caregiver I could find so she would have someone with her during the hours I was away.

At first, Michael was a blessing.

Grandma adored him.

But then they started having secrets.

I would step into the kitchen, and their conversation would stop mid-sentence.

Once, I came in to find Michael hurriedly sliding several papers out of sight.

"What was that?"

"A lady and her gentleman are allowed a little privacy," Grandma said.

Then she announced that Michael would be sleeping in her bedroom.

"If I fall at night, I need him close," she said.

That might not have seemed strange…

if I hadn't caught the odd little smile Michael gave her.

One night around midnight, I went upstairs because I had forgotten to bring Grandma her water.

The bedroom door was locked.

There was a strange scraping sound inside.

"Grandma?"

After a long silence, she finally answered, "We're BUSY, sweetheart.

Go back downstairs."

When I later asked what they had been doing, she answered without even looking at me:

"Our own private business."

That was when my imagination went somewhere ugly.

Grandma had considerable savings.

I became sure Michael was manipulating her.

But whenever I tried to get Michael alone, he found some excuse to keep Grandma between us.

She became furious that I would even dare suspect him of anything.

This went on for several more weeks, until one night, a bang from upstairs jolted me awake.

I ran into the hallway and noticed a thin strip of light glowing beneath Grandma's locked door.

Then I heard her whisper,

"No one in this family can find out until the right time."

Michael answered, "Ruth, once we do THIS, there's NO GOING BACK."

For one horrible moment, I thought he might be threatening her.

I forced the door open —

And my hand flew to my mouth at the sight of everything laid out across Grandma's bed.

"What have you two done?!" I screamed.

---

What was spread across that bed — and what had Ruth and Michael been hiding all along?
