Chapter 2: The Bottle He Carried In

Every person in that room turned to look at him.
His mother spun around.
The moment she saw the bottle, her face went white.
"Daniel," she said quietly.
"What are you doing?"
He didn't answer her.
He turned to face the room instead — her boss, her colleagues, the client she'd spent months trying to impress — and he spoke clearly enough for everyone to hear.
"I want to show you all something."
He set the bottle down on the table in front of him.
Then he reached into his jacket and pulled out his phone.
He turned the screen toward the room.
It was a photo.
My wedding dress.
The full stain across the front, red against white, taken that same night.
"Five days ago," he said, "my wife wore a dress like this one.
And someone in this room made sure she'd never forget it."
His mother's mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
"Daniel, this is not the place—"
"You chose the place," he said.
"Not me."
The room was completely silent.
The client leaned forward.
Her boss hadn't moved.
And then his mother did something none of us expected.
She laughed.
Not nervously.
Not to cover embarrassment.
She actually laughed — and looked around the room like she still believed she was untouchable.
That's when Daniel reached for the bottle.
