Chapter 2: The Name I Didn't Know

His name was Daniel.
I'd seen him around during Nathan's study groups but never spoken to him much.
He glanced over his shoulder before he spoke, like he was checking that Nathan couldn't hear.
"How long have you known about Priya?"
I stared at him.
"Who's Priya?"
He looked like he'd just realized he'd said too much — or maybe not enough.
"Nathan has been seeing someone," he said carefully.
"For a while now.
I thought you knew.
I assumed that's why you two were—" He stopped himself.
My hands were still holding the divorce papers.
"How long?" I asked.
He didn't answer right away.
"Daniel.
How long?"
"At least two years," he said quietly.
"Maybe longer."
Two years.
While I was working double shifts.
While I was skipping meals to cover his tuition.
While I was telling myself the sacrifice was worth it.
"There's something else," he said.
"Something I think you need to see."
He reached into his jacket and pulled out his phone.
His hand was shaking slightly as he turned the screen toward me.
I looked at the photo.
And the ground felt like it disappeared beneath my feet.
