Chapter 1: The Envelope
I worked two jobs to help fulfill my husband's dream of becoming a doctor — at his graduation, he handed me divorce papers, but just as I was walking away, one of his classmates said, "Before you leave, there's something you should know."
Nathan and I met during our first year of medical school.
Back then, we had the same dream.
We'd become doctors, build a life together, and someday look back at those exhausting years and laugh.
Then Nathan's family fell into serious financial trouble.
Suddenly, he couldn't afford tuition anymore.
He was ready to quit.
I couldn't stand watching him lose the dream he'd worked toward his entire life, so I made a decision that changed everything.
I dropped out.
I told Nathan one doctor in the family would be ENOUGH.
Then I took two jobs so we could pay his tuition and keep him in school.
He promised me it wouldn't be forever.
Once he became a doctor, we'd finally have the future we'd always talked about.
I believed every word.
We married a year later.
For the next several years, I worked constantly while Nathan studied.
Every exam he passed felt like ours.
Every step closer to graduation made the sacrifice seem worth it.
Then graduation day finally came.
I sat in the audience crying as Nathan walked across that stage, convinced we'd made it.
After the ceremony, he came over smiling and handed me a large envelope.
For some reason, I thought he'd planned a surprise for me.
I opened it.
Divorce papers.
I looked up at him, completely stunned.
Before I could even speak, Nathan turned and walked away.
I stood there holding the papers I'd apparently sacrificed my own future to receive.
Eventually, I started walking, though I had no idea where I was going.
Then one of Nathan's classmates stepped toward me.
He looked genuinely concerned.
"Before you leave...
there's something you should know."
