Chapter 2: What Lily Was Hiding
Brent didn't flinch.
He actually smiled.
"Relax, Mason.
We were just keeping things under control while you were gone."
Mason took one step forward.
His voice dropped lower.
"Under control."
He looked at the kennel lock.
Then at the cane still in Brent's hand.
"Open it.
Now."
Nicole crossed her arms.
"You don't understand what Lily was about to do.
She was going to ruin everything.
We had no choice."
Lily grabbed the kennel wire with both hands.
"Dad — she's lying.
I found something.
In the house.
Something they didn't want anyone to see—"
"Shut her up," Nicole snapped.
Mason turned slowly toward Nicole.
The look on his face made her step back.
He unlatched the kennel himself.
Emma flew into his arms.
Lily stayed on the ground, shaking.
He knelt down beside her.
"What did you find?"
Lily looked at Brent.
Then back at her father.
She reached into her sleeve and pulled out a folded piece of paper.
Her hand was trembling.
Before she could open it — Brent lunged forward.
"Don't you dare show him that."
